The Beautiful Outsiders from Masterplan Film Productions Announced

The Beautiful Outsiders is the upcoming feature from UK production company Masterplan Film Productions, starring Tara Reid (American Pie), Brad Dourif (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and Doug Bradley (Hellraiser). Writer/director Andrew Jones (who is set to update the video nasty classic The Driller Killer) has fashioned a road movie/crime drama with echoes of Badlands and True Romance, which tells of two lovers who are forced to go on the run after a tragic accident.

The Beautiful Outsiders tells of Jason Starkweather (Cameron Douglas), a former drug addict who is released from prison after six years. Placed in a halfway house and in a dead end job, he struggles to suppress the urge to return to his old ways. His ex-girlfriend Sarah Fugate (Tara Reid) works in a brothel to pay her way through university while living with an abusive older man (Giovanni Lombardo Radice). Desperate to make up for his past mistakes, Jason tracks Sarah down. A shocking incident reunites the couple and they go on the run, fleeing the authorities while rekindling their love for one another.

After a number of incidents on the road, including betrayal by one of Jason’s friends (Nathan Sussex), the couple take refuge in the house of affluent Richard (Doug Bradley) and his daughter Shannon. Eventually, the unlikely foursome are brought together by the shared pain of their pasts and forge a genuine bond as the police close in.

“The ‘lovers-on-the-run’ sub genre doesn’t really have a British addition to join films such as Natural Born Killers and Thelma and Louise, so the fact this is made in the UK immediately makes it a little different,” says Jones on his contribution to the genre made famous by Bonnie & Clyde back in 1967. “The major difference with this film is that I’m bringing a dark gritty sensibility to a mainstream genre. So while it’ll be a more commercial offering than my previous efforts, this film will retain a hard edge that’s rooted in realism. Think Alan Clarke meets Quentin Tarantino, with a dash of a horror sensibility thrown in, and that’s close to the style we’re looking at with this film.”

At times thrilling, at times tragic – The Beautiful Outsiders will appeal to fans of both love stories and action movies, delivering both when it counts. At the centre, in between the blood and the bullets, is a very simple tale of everlasting love. “I think everyone who’s had a shit job with an obnoxious boss or who feels like life is constantly kicking them in the balls will relate to how these characters decide that they don’t have to just take that crap anymore,” Jones concludes.

The Beautiful Outsiders is set to begin filming in South Wales later this year, with an estimated budget of £850,000 (approx. $1,600,000). Jones has opted to shoot on 35mm with an aspect ratio of 2:35:1, citing the early works of John Carpenter (Halloween, The Fog) as prime examples of how this style of widescreen can help enhance a film’s low budget and give it bigger scope.
