Re:Naissance Revolution (Re)Animates Night of the Living Dead and other Favorite Films

Ben (Duane Jones) in Night of the Living DeadWe have gotten exciting news on a revolutionary new form of animation that would transform the film industry forever! The Re:Naissance project would use our favorite existing films and transform them with a combination of animation and rotoscopy, called “rotomotion,” to give them an entirely new look.

Rotomotion can be applied to any film using any kind of animation style. The result would be that a live-action movie be turned into a “living comic.” From Wikipedia: “For the first time ever in the 100-year history of animation, Re:Naissance is going to invert the adaptation process by taking existing live-action films and faithfully reproducing them in animation, in a totally original graphic style unique to every film. As astonishing as it might sound, this has never been done.”

The first film being given the Re:Naissance treatment is our genre’s much revered Night of the Living Dead by George A. Romero. This will be somewhat similar to the treatment being given to the film by Mike Schneider’s Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated project (read about it HERE, an interview with Schneider HERE and an update on the project HERE), in which artists from all over the world contribute animated scenes, creating a remarkably edgy revisionist homage to Romero’s original. An animated Ben from Night of the Living Dead

The Re:Naissance project is being spearheaded by Christopher Panzner, who worked on the Oscar-nominated animated film The Triplets of Belleville and many other award-nominated/winning animated films, has been a writer/producer for 25 years and worked on many breakthrough film and animation techniques. Panzner also has a passion for animation, graphic novels and comics. Inspiration for Re:Naissance occurred when Panzner noticed how many graphic novels were getting the big-screen treatment and in turn wondered why established, live-action movies hadn’t been given the comic book treatment.
