HorrorHound 2007 Weekend Report

Happy Friday the 13th! Today, every horror fans’ holy day, we bring you a very special report…
Our very own Fiend of Grue attended the first ever HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 6th through the 8th, which was also his very first convention. Like a kid in a candy shop, Mr. Grue ran rampant for the three whole days of the convention! Check out his special report of HorrorHound Weekend below!

It’s all over. The curtains have drawn on the first ever HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis, Indiana and I must say, it was one hell of a great weekend. From when the door first opened on Friday until the vendors were tearing down on Sunday, I was there and in every way it exceeded my expectations. I have been in a passionate and very intimate relationship with horror movies for what is going on 25 years now and this was my first con ever, so you’ll have to forgive me for being a complete fan boy when talking about this event.

Saw 2 trapWe (me, my wife and best friend) went on Friday around 4:30. We knew we couldn’t get in until 5 pm, but we wanted to get there early. It was a good decision because the horror museum that the convention commercialed was actually outside of the con, so we hit it up first. I had the pleasure of being the first person from this convention to put on the original and only existing Venus Flytrap featured in Saw 2. It was actually pretty heavy and it felt good to have a piece of horror history around my neck. Next up was the museum itself which had artifacts of everything from Freddy’s outfit used in A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 to the chainsaw used in Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Check this exhibit if it comes to a con your attending, it’s well worth 5 bucks.

The time had now come. 5 o’clock was upon us and as we approached the convention doorway, it was complete madness, people everywhere. We picked up our pre-ordered convention t-shirts, got our wristbands, and into a sea of blissful hell we descended. For me, it was sensory overload for about the first hour. Shirts, hats, DVD’s, masks, paintings, drawings, posters, figurines, statues, magazines, celebrities and wall to wall horror freaks. I was beaming like a kid on Christmas morning…was this a dream?

Mr. Grue and Mr. HaigAlmost all of the celebrites that I met was very nice and really appreciative of their fans. Bill Moseley, Sid Haig, Ken Foree, James Duvall, Kevin Spiritas, the Toe Tag crew and Hanna Hall were all very cool people, but the same cannot be said for Tom Savini or Andrew Brynairski. Both of those guys were not very pleasant to meet, unfortunately.

Mr. Grue and Mr. MosleyOver the course of three days I managed to spend entirely too much money, but it was worth every penny of it. You see, at conventions you can usually find all of the cool shit you’ve ever wanted, but never been able to find and I had been told to make sure you’ve got plenty of money, so I came prepared. Now I am passing that advice onto you…BRING MONEY! Most of these things are planned way in advance, so if you also plan in advance you can have a small fortune to spend. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

Paul Davis and Mr. GrueOver the weekend, several independent films were playing. I only got to catch one of them, Beware The Moon, which is a documentary still in the making about An American Werewolf In London. The director, Paul Davis was in attendance and did a question and answer after showing the first fifteen minutes of the upcoming feature-length picture. Great guy and let me tell you any fan of this movie is going to love this documentary when it’s finished.

HorrorHound Madness!Throughout the weekend I was in awe of the atmosphere and vibe running through the event. It was great to be surrounded by people with an equal passion for the genre as I myself have. I met so many cool people last weekend and the response to this inaugural event has been positive across the board. From talking with HorrorHound editor, Nathan Hanneman, all of the vendors did very well and the turn out was much better than expected. It’s only going to get better and it appears as though HorrorHound Weekend is here to stay.

I am sad that it is over, but am very much looking forward to the next HorrorHound Weekend at the same place this November 16th -18th because the roster is already looking great. If you love horror and have never been to a convention, make it a point to attend one. You certainly won’t regret going but you will dread looking at your bank account afterwards!
