Throughout history mankind has used its likeness in a multitude of art forms, none more harmless than the Doll. Surprisingly the ‘Doll’ has enjoyed an extremely long existence having been around since the dawn of humans. Why then are so many people afraid of theses ‘harmless’ playthings? Maybe because they have been used in Witchcraft and Voodoo, or possibly because of the newfound outlet in cinema, with the demonic ax-wielding murderous doll? The answers may lie in this exhibit. After viewing Angry Girl’s Rexi Dolls and Basted’s Creepy Gothic Dolls, the viewer at Chaos Gallery may need to re-examine how they relate to these strange creatures.

“While sitting in my living room – pissed off at the state of the world and not knowing where to place my anger, I ventured off to the lowly thrift stores in search of something fantastic. I stumbled upon bags & bags of the unwanted toys, the broken, the battered, the be-headed, and the misfits. They all cried out for a home and returned into Angry Girl Art. Armed with my glue-gun, I found it my duty to reassemble and recycle these misfit toys” - Angry Girl

Native to Los Angeles, Angry Girl was raised in the San Fernando Valley. By day she owns and operates a shirt printing company, by night, doll disassembler.

Attack of the Rexi Dolls by Angry Girl“I have always loved dolls and art. When I was little, I was either playing Barbies with my sister or drawing girls on the blank inside covers of my coloring books. My parents would take me and my sister on road trips and one of the things we always seemed to do was stop at doll shops and doll museums. It was always the part of the trip that stuck out in my head, there was something so sad about the dolls and sometimes the women who collected them. Those days paved the way for where I am today, I love to find old dolls and give them new life. Dolls are creepy as is, but I enjoy making them even creepier!” – Basted

Basted has been creating Creepy Dolls for seven years and is grateful to everyone who has made it possible for her to, not only be a full time artist but an adult who gets to play with dolls.
