Death Metal Documentary to Release this February
The official street date for Death Metal: Are We Watching You Die? is February 23, 2010, but some places allow for a pre-order.
This 2-hour documentary doesn’t regurgitate information that EVERYONE already knows. Rather than treating viewers like outsiders, the intention is to present the artists in as cordial a depiction as possible, allowing them to candidly talk about a variety of topics. No narrator is welcome – there is no need to put words in an artist’s mouth. The tale is told by experts who don’t need to have their views simplified or sensationalized.
In addition to legendary death metal bands, representatives from the enemy camp were also interviewed – black metallers Marduk, Mayhem, and Cradle of Filth talk about the divisions of the past as well as the lowering of boundaries in the present. There are also people like Liv Kristine, who revolutionized the beauty-and-the-beast contrast between operatic female vocals and guttural death metal vocals in a hybridized musical form that borrowed from many influences outside of death metal in the older incarnation of Theatre of Tragedy.
As with all Bill Zebub documentaries, this one shows a personal side to bands and will hopefully serve as a launchpad for curious viewers to seek out more information. Death metal fans are ACTIVE fans, and that is what prevents the music from dying…
