Synopsis: Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Brody) and Elsa (Polley) specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiments. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature that exhibits uncommon intelligence and an array of unexpected physical developments. And though, at first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams, she begins to grow and learn at an accelerated rate-and threatens to become their worst nightmare.
Fun Facts About the Film:
Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast are named after actors, Colin Clive and Elsa Lanchester who starred in the James Whale Frankenstein films.
Newstead Pharmaceutical is named after the Lord Byron’s estate where Mary Shelley wrote the original novel, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus
The first thing that Elsa says upon seeing Baby Dren is “It’s alive.”, a tribute to the famous line from Whale’s first Frankenstein film.
Fred and Ginger are named after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Ginger and Fred were designed by Clive and Elsa as part of a frontier research project to develop organisms that produce medicinal proteins. A protein known as CD356 is harvested from their blood and muscle tissue that has powerful cellular restorative properties.
Clive and Elsa’s lab, NERD is an acronym for Nucleic Exchange Research & Development
The gestation cell, BETI is an acronym for Biomechanical Extroutero Thermal Incubator
Dren is made from human DNA spliced with the same genetic template as Ginger and Fred, which includes numerous animal, insect and plant lifeforms. However, dormant genes (also known as junk genes) are also activated, resulting in physical traits that neither Clive nor Elsa can predict.
The creation of real animal human chimeras was approved by the British government in 2007 shortly before the production of Splice.
Dren’s life cycle is nine months
In the film we see Dren in five stages: Birth pod, Baby, Toddler, Child, Adult and the final ‘secret stage’
The manga-style painting hanging on Clive and Elsa’s bedroom wall has a caption balloon “They’re coming!”, a double entendre written in Japanese.
Delphine Chaneac was the very first actress to audition for the part of Dren
The manga-style painting that it is an original piece created by the Splice art department based on a drawing by the director.
