Music Review: The Fright – Dacabre

The Fright - DacabreReview by Tony – Hell Feels Like Home

The Fright have a great horror metal sound mixed with some of the gothic moodiness that made the first Danzig album so memorable. The guitars have a dark harsh tone, while the bass and drums are thick and melodic with a sinister undertone. Vocalist, Lon, has a mid to low range bellow that is somewhere between T.B. Monstrosity and Glenn Danzig. Lyrically this album has a nice balance of monsters entwined with darker emotions and gothic romanticism.

“Birth” starts this album out with some bent ringing guitar switched off with some tight pounding rhythms before the song kicks in full into a hard driving rocker. The vocals here croon, wail and warble  about tentacle monster babies with a really catchy chorus with lovely “whoaas” behind the lead vocals. “So Cold” is my favorite song on this record. This one starts with a crushing melodic riff that breaks into some slower ringing guitar. The vocals really shine here, and absolutely wail over the music. The verse has a start-stop riff that breaks into a fast paced stomp for the second part of the verse and chorus. Cool creepy lyrics that contemplate the passage of time for the dead. “Wildmoon” starts off with some howling and a lone distorted guitar before breaking into a slow swirling picked guitar that changes into a heavy snaking riff for the verse. Great catchy vocal line here with lyrics that proclaim to be wild when the moon shines down upon them. “Love of the Damned” starts with a slow grinding stomp that melts into an eerie hard riff. The vocals here have a great romantic feel and really croon and warble with emotion. “Boundless” closes this album on a high note and is like nothing else on Dacabre. This song has twinkling beautiful keyboard over top of a brooding bass line. Lon’s vocals are a deep demonic wolves howl that recall Glenn Danzig’s best and most emotive work on How the Gods Kill.

I really enjoyed this record and hope to hear more from The Fright in the future. Think of them as a more metal Blitzkid with the dark gothic feel of Danzig I. I think fans of both of those bands, along with fans of newer stuff like Zombeast will really be into this so give The Fright a chance!
