Music Review: Dead End Guys – Among the Dead

Dead End Guys - Among the DeadDead End Guys –
Review by Tony – Hell Feels Like Home

Dead End Guys are from Germany and Contralight Records (who also released The Fright CD I reviewed not to long ago) were kind enough to send me this release. Dead End Guys sound alternates between fierce melodic 70′s punk abandonment and a harder moody metallic sound. Vocalist Lars Vegas has a nice melodic mid range voice that occasionally takes some of the 60′s crooning quality of Dave Vanian (The Damned).

“Entombed” starts off with cryptic crawling guitars that quickly turn into a huge all out brawl-heavy, pounding riff. The verse vocals are a dark croon that follows the guitar riff, the chorus keeps the fast pace but has a huge melodic hook full of “whoas” and soaring vocals. The title track is my favorite on this record. Gigo’s guitars sound amazing, blazing fast riff bashed out with early punk recklessness and melody. Think 1950′s rock n’ roll on steroids and speed. The vocals have a cool warbling 50′s quality to them. Great start-and-stop chorus, and a nice end break where the vocals take on a deeper sinister quality. “Inhale” starts off sounding like The Ramones have risen from the grave, but then the break between the chorus and verse pulls out some smoking old school Metallica-style guitar leads. The last track “It’s Brought to Life” starts with some fast, hard buzz-saw, “Flight of the Bumble Bee” metal-surf hybrid guitars. When this started it was a real surprise with how much harder it is then the rest of the album. The vocals on this one are more of a gruff rhythmic shout with miles of attitude.

It took me a few listens to get into this album mainly because the Dead End Guys so seamlessly blend so many different styles together that I never knew what was coming from where. This is a great first release by Dead End Guys. If you are a fan of harder edged horror punk and are looking for something new check this one out.
