Werewolf in a Women’s Prison (2007)

Review by Mitch Emerson

Sarah (Victoria De Mare) and her boyfriend (Vinnie Bilancio) camp out in the mountains and get attacked by a werewolf. Blamed for her boyfriend’s death, she is thrust into a woman’s prison. There, Sarah and other helpless females get abused and sold for sex by the Warden (Domiziano Arcangeli). But soon Sarah discovers she has supernatural strength. As the full moon emerges she turns into a werewolf and gets back to the abusers. The Warden decides to make money off Sarah’s affliction by putting on a show during the next full moon…but she breaks lose.

The truly amazing thing about Werewolf in a Women’s Prison is that more than one person thought it was a good film. Sure the premise is campy, but we have seen camp done right. I think in a lot of ways horror has taken a big step backwards. In the 80’s, it was all about the special effects. Who could make this shit look real? Story was swept to the wayside, but it was OK, the focus was on the effects. Now that that particular mountain has been scaled, story should be the main concern, especially in low budget horror. That being said, I’ll bet you figured out that the story here sucks. What really surprises me is how bad the effects are. There are scenes where you can see the blood tube on the side of one dude’s neck. I know it’s low budget, but give me a break! If I didn’t know better I would say that this was written and directed by a 17 year old kid with daddy’s credit card and some twisted pubescent dreams/nightmares, then talked his sisters friends into being in his “movie”. In the eroticism category, we get plenty of nudity, one lesbian sex scene that has just as much heat as an igloo, a dominatrix, and a drugged rape scene that all of a sudden becomes consensual sex. See what I mean?

I can’t even bring myself to call the people featured in this film actors/actresses. The lead, Victoria De Mare, boasts of being in twenty-five films in five years. Unfortunately she hasn’t learned anything about acting in that time. She can’t even portray being electrocuted convincingly. If the lead can’t act, is there really any reason to mention the others?

Production values? What production values? For example: The lighting was horrible. Look, if you are gonna have a latex werewolf suit, keep the lighting dark. Use the shadows, add a little slime to make it look moist. Don’t light it up like a damn parade so you can see how fake the suit is! Color matching and/or editing: There is one scene where Sarah is being chased through some brush by a guard. While cutting between her and the guard there is a noticeable difference in lighting. You could tell that they weren’t in the same location. These are just a couple of examples from a laundry list.

If this is how far writer Vinnie Bilancio and writer/director Jeff Leroy have come, they need to find day jobs. Has anybody seen M. Night Shyamalan’s home movies that he puts on his DVD’s? Those show more potential for filmmaking than Werewolf in a Women’s Prison. This film is just an infantile pre-pubescent kid’s fantasy that should have been left inside his head.
