Valentine (2001)

Review by Siko Mike

Valentine’s Day should be the day for couples to express their true love for each other. It is a day of happiness and romance but then on the other hand it can be the perfect day for a bloody revenge that will leave a group of women in pure terror.

Jeremy Melton was always a loner and basically the teenager that everyone ignored or made fun of. He was a very kind and caring boy who girls loved to torment. Jeremy asks a few girls if they would like to dance with him. Well Shelley (Katherine Heigl), Lily (Jessica Cauffiel), and Paige (Denise Richards) laughed in his face and called him a loser and told him to get lost. Kate (Marley Shelton) on the other hand was nice and gave him a maybe later. Then he asked Dorothy (Jessica Capshaw) who was also kind of an outcast like he was. So the two kids begin making out under the bleachers when four guys creep up from above them laughing at them. Dorothy realizes that they are being watched and pushes Jeremy off her calling him a pervert and accusing him of attacking her. The guys dump a bowl of punch all over Jeremy covering him in sticky red before leaping down. They drag him out of his clothes in front of everyone while beating him down to the floor and kicking him violently.

Jeremy was sent to reform school and they never heard from him again. Thirteen years later, Shelley turns up dead and the girls reunite for the first time since high school graduation. One by one they receive threatening Valentine cards stating that they were going to die signed by the name JM. They turn to a detective who is on the case to find out what happened to Jeremy after the middle school dance. It turns out that Jeremy might have had plastic surgery done and could be anyone even good looking guys that they might know. Then one by one they are preyed upon by a killer wearing a black trench coat and a cupid mask.

Valentine is one of my favorite slasher films from the early 2000s. It packs a lot of suspense and keeps you entertained start to finish. The beginning with the whole middle school thing with Jeremy reminded me of when I was about 13 because I was very quiet and I was often teased myself. I have been in Jeremy’s shoes with the way these girls treated him (aside from getting the hell beat outta me by the guys). Kids can definitely be cruel and this film reveals that perfectly. The death scenes were fuckin’ awesome like the one in the hot tub and with the arrow. These girls got what they deserved in my opinion and this is a movie where you do side with the killer due to what happened to him at the beginning, which actually makes you feel sorry for him. Also, the actors gave a very believable performance and made the film that much better. The ending was intelligently done, which made me leave the theater with a smile on my face. I highly recommend Valentine if you are a fan of the slasher genre or even a fan for revenge movies.
