The Red Cell (2007)
Review by The Angry Princess
A poor boy is suffering from a debilitating disease that will claim his life in a very short amount of time. Ayden awakens in some man-made prison with an IV full of God knows what dripping into his arm. Flashbacks show what little he remembers from the hospital he was just in, and he doesn’t even remember how he has gotten to where he is now lying on some cold steel table. Looking around and taking in his surroundings Ayden looks for a way out, only there is no way out, only little diversions that cause false hope before the sense of dread and reality kicks in.
The walls are colored red with his own blood with only a small covered window that just might be fake. The man who has him held in captivity like this ends up letting himself be known and you wonder what the hell the point is, but I think there was no point, he just wanted Ayden to suffer. There is a part where part where Ayden wakes up to find his head in a vise, his captor wearing a gas mask with straggly gray hairs clinging to his clothes as he prepares to put a drill thru the boys head that absolutely was killing me with suspense.
Daily Ayden tries to find away out until one day he wakes up to find a diary lying there. As he reads it he learns more about the man who watches him through a hole in the wall. The acting wasn’t spectacular but in the cover letter accompanying the movie, it explains that they might not always use the best actors since they would like to give people a chance at doing what they have always dreamed of.
The room without a view is a chamber of hell for Ayden as he walks around finding bodily secretions, fluids and a pile of something that must have come from someone’s insides. Watching the vomiting in the blood filled toilet looked like he was throwing up his own insides, and very painfully at that. The film was a little slow but better than a lot of the other independent flicks I have been reviewing. If you are into action-packed, fast-moving horror this is not for you. If you like to watch things quietly pan out than hop on this one fast.
I personally like the fact that they are letting people try their luck at acting. I wonder all the time if I could act. Could I really convince people of this character I would be portraying? Of course, acting looks easy but as you can tell from watching countless B-movies that it obviously isn’t that damn easy or we wouldn’t make fun of horrible actors with a roll of our eyes or a moan of disbelief. There are only really two main characters in the story to decipher so relax and enjoy the nightmare of Ayden’s breakdown in The Red Cell.
