The New Kids (1985)

Review by Siko Mike

I have always been a huge fan of teen thrillers because they can possibly happen which is why they are true terror. The New Kids represents the teen thriller perfectly basically revealing that even young teens can be vicious psychopaths.

The film centers around a girl named Abby (Lori Loughlin) and her brother Loren (Shannon Presby) who have just lost both of their parents in a car accident. The teens are invited to move to Florida to live with their Uncle Charlie (Eddie Jones) and Aunt Fay (Lucy Martin) and they agree to do so since their father was very close to their uncle. When they start school however, a group of boys harass Abby. Abby and Loren meet Eddie Dutra (James Spader) who is the leader of the group, which doesn’t become a pleasant welcome. After getting rejected by Abby when he asks her out on a date, Eddie and the gang vandalize their uncle’s house which also happens to be an amusement park/gas station. Then they scratch up Uncle Charlie’s favorite car while Loren and Abby are inside a store buying more paint to fix up the park. The boys then stomp Loren in the locker room nearly to death. Things take a terrifying turn for the worse when Eddie starts stalking Abby and his gang of misfits kidnaps her from the school dance. Filled with rage, fueled on cocaine and gripping a shotgun Eddie decides to have his final showdown in Uncle Charlie’s amusement park.

This film was an instant classic for me as far as the thrill and terror that this film brought out. The New Kids was directed by Sean S. Cunningham who was also the director of Friday the 13th and House! The film was released in 1985 and I thought it turned out really well. The tension is high and these kids meet something they had never experienced before which was pure TERROR face to face!!

I give this an 8/10 just for a guy getting his head run over by a rollercoaster cart!!
