The Hitcher (1986)
Revisited by Siko Mike
We always hear the statement “Never pick up hitchhikers” throughout our childhood. The Hitcher is a film that proves exactly why we shouldn’t pick up strangers. You just never know if a hitchhiker is an insane maniac or just a normal guy needing a lift.
Jim Halsey is a young teen on his way to California to drop off a car when late one night he sees a guy standing out in the rain who appears to have car trouble. He stops to pick up the guy who says that his name is John Ryder. As they get down the road, John admits to killing a guy by chopping both his arms and legs off. John then pulls a knife to Jim’s throat telling him to say, “I want to die.” Jim refuses and kicks John out of the car and onto the street. Later, Jim finds that John is everywhere he goes and has framed Jim for his sadistic killing spree. Jim ends up meeting a young waitress named Nash who agrees to help him outsmart the crazed hitchhiker and prove to the police that he was framed. Can they stop John or will they die trying?
I finally found The Hitcher when I went to Movie Gallery the other night and damn it blew me away! This film is full of edge-of-your seat action and will keep you entertained start to finish. The acting was top notch especially by C. Thomas Howell (Jim) and Rutger Hauer( John Ryder). The guys who did the remake really fucked up this film big time! I hated the updated version of this film. The original The Hitcher, though, is definitely a must-see horror classic of the 80′s.
