I Spit on Your Grave (1978)
Review by Siko Mike
I have seen many horror films that really threw me to the edge of my seat but nothing prepared me for I Spit on Your Grave.
Jennifer Hills is an author who is staying in a summer cabin so that she can write her first novel. Everything is quiet and peaceful until one day some country boys begin to give Jennifer a hard time. They attach her raft to their power boat and drag her to shore where they chase her through the woods. She runs into a man in the pasture who throws her down on the ground. He begins taking off her bathing suit as his buddies hold her down. It turns out that the man was the gas station attendant that Jennifer met on her way up to the cabin. The other guy is Matthew who Jennifer also met earlier in the film and happens to be a virgin. The other guys thought it would be nice to help Matthew lose his virginity by him raping Jennifer. He starts feeling guilty and scared so Johnny and the gang decides to show him how it’s done. After raping her then they leave so Jennifer starts walking back towards the cabin. Once she gets halfway, she spots the guys again who throw her over a rock and one of them rapes her from behind as she screams in agony. Jennifer finally gets back to her cabin covered in mud, nude and limping. She goes to call the police but Johnny and the gang are already inside. They beat her until she is unconscious and Matthew decides that he wants to be like his friends and so he too rapes Jennifer. On the way out, Johnny asks for Matthew to finish the job by stabbing Jennifer in the chest with a hunting knife. The guys think she is dead so they leave not knowing that Matthew lied to them about killing her. About a week or two later the woman comes back to exact a bloody revenge on the men that stole her innocence and left her to die.
This film is shocking as hell from beginning to end! It kinda reminded me of a blend of Last House on the Left, Chaos, The New Kids and Deliverance all in one. It will make both guys and girls cringe and scream believe me on that! There are some clever murder scenes like someone being hung from a tree, a guy taking a bath and getting his private parts cut off, a guy getting an axe in the back and a dude getting chewed up by a boat propeller.
The acting is believable as well as the characters and story. The scariest thing about this film is the reality factor. Shit like this does happen to people in real life. The film was very brutal and top notch for a 70′s film. The scene where Jennifer is being raped and screaming to the top of her lungs was very hard to watch. I really tried to look away but just couldn’t because my eyes were glued to the damn screen. Then the scene in the bathtub really had me in pain and agony. It was almost like I could feel the pain that this guy felt from just watching it happen right in front of me.
I really recommend horror fans to see I Spit on Your Grave because it is a very true and realistic horror film. The gore is also top notch and brings the movie delightful bloody pleasure. I give major props to director Meir Zarchi for this film. Highly, highly recommended!
