Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain (2003)
Review by the Fiend of Grue
Two American tourists on a romantic camping trip are brutally murdered. A few days later, during the ancient festival of Samhain, a group of American university students moves into a beautiful cottage, surrounded by a lush forest and a majestic lake They are here to learn about the rituals of the ancient Druids and other Celtic legends. But in the remains of an abandoned copper mine lives the ancestors of an incestuous clan of cannibals. Stalked by a hulking, disfigured mutant, the students and their chaperon are in for the most harrowing time of their young lives. And keeping their heads on their necks will become their main concern…
Evil Breed: The Legend of Samhain was a pretty decent indie, B grade flick . I was expecting nothing and was quite surprised. Right off the bat, in true horror movie fashion…titties and gore, and it doesn’t stop there, there’s plenty more of that to come. This movie pays major homage to Evil Dead in dialogue, in scenery and even in some jump scares. Evil Breed likes to reference the ultimate indie horror classic throughout it’s 80 minute run time, in which a good many movies like this seem to do.
There isn’t a lot of new things brought to the table with this movie, but it does have good pacing, good acting and a few creative death scenes. One in particular involves a guy getting killed by having his innards ripped out through his ass!!! Can’t say I’ve seen that one before. Oh yeah…the legendary porn star Jenna Jameson also has a small role in this movie and she seems to have at least some talent outside of just lying on her back in a “movie”.
The effects worked well in this movie for a shoe string budget. Nothing was too cheesy or bad although the cannibals looked an awful lot like the Toxic Avenger. They could have given them a little more of their own identity for more effect. Overall I’d say this movie was better than most of the direct-to-video, no budget, horror-fare that I’ve seen lately. It was a good, kids-stuck-in-the-woods-and-being-hunted-by-a-killer type of movie that some of you might enjoy.
