Disturbia (2007)

Disturbia Review by Siko Mike

Disturbia tells the story of a teen named Kale who has recently been put on house arrest for punching his Spanish teacher who made a remark about his father. Kale’s father was killed in a terrible car crash which has really had a hard effect on him. After Kale’s mother blocks out the Internet, television and video games from Kale’s daily activities, he has to find another way to occupy his time at home…so he uses it by spying on his neighbors.

First, on the new girl next door who he has a crush on. The two teens finally meet and hang out along with Kale’s best friend. Then one night Kale begins to suspect that the man across the street is a vicious serial killer. As the three teens investigate, they go deeper and deeper into their neighbor’s dark desires. What starts off as harmless spying turns into a game of cat and mouse as they discover the truth. But how can you let people know when nobody believes you?

I went into this movie with mixed feelings due to the PG-13 rating but honestly I was very surprised at this film. Disturbia is not really classified as a horror film but is a suspense thriller with some comic relief and high quality action and scares. There are maybe 2 or 3 dull moments but other that that you are either laughing or shocked with your eyes glued to the fuckin’ screen!

The acting was dead on, especially Shia LaBeouf (Kale) and Davis Morse (Mr.Turner aka the killer). The first half of the movie is basically a drama/comedy but then the second half is straight suspense, action, horror and thrills. What I liked the most are the character relations and the story because you really feel sorry for Kale because of what happened to his dad. The suspense in this movie is what makes it really well done along with the comic relief, action and horror side of the story. There is very little blood/gore shown in this film but we do get a look at some horrifying corpses which makes this film scary.

The message that I got from this film is that you never know who your neighbors really are and that every psychopath lives next door to someone which is really creepy. Now another thing I found really creepy was the inside of the Mr.Turner’s home with plenty of secret passages and everything.

Disturbia is a well crafted suspenseful, funny, action-packed thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed despite its PG-13 rating. Not every scary movie has to have blood/gore/sex to be a great film. I will definitely be adding this film to my DVD collection when it comes out and really recommend it to anyone who likes suspenseful and action-packed thrillers with a side of comedy. Disturbia is a well-crafted thriller that relies on suspense and leads to pure terror!
