Dementia (2006)

Welcome a brand new reviewer to the team, The Angry Princess!

Review by The Angry Princess

Danny Fresco has decided in his mind that people will never change and he needs be the one to help the world be rid of such annoying nuisances. Looking at Danny you see an innocent looking man with bright blue eyes and a seemingly soft demeanor…but do not piss him off or you’ll end up at his favorite hang out… the shed. This story is about a man who is truly losing it upstairs and unfortunately responds to what his mind tells him to do. All rationality is gone once he settles on his next target and decides they deserve to die. He never thinks twice about going with his animal instincts. It’s funny because you never know what random thing you might do that will enrage someone enough to act on it.

David C. Emerson from Dallas, Texas plays the main character Danny well with his stoic emotionless face as each victim gets what they so rightly deserve. Who knows what will set him off; it could be a friend who made a promise he couldn’t keep or a petty thief who’d rather steal than work for a living. Emerson has been in several other indie films, but Dementia is his first horror/ suspense flick. I think Emerson does a great job convincing the viewer of all the turmoil he has nestled inside as he narrates his thoughts and feelings as the movie steadily progresses.

Dementia is a movie that is put together well and has clean editing throughout. There are no choppy glitches to deafen this movie’s strong contact. I was impressed with the way they hardly had any gore but were still able to administer the impact of what was going on. A lot of independent films seem to concentrate on the visual impact of a film rather than to get the audience thinking. Watching this I started thinking of things like is he crazy? They say crazy people don’t know that their minds are warped, but Danny is well aware of his surroundings and of all his grisly deeds.

I will be straightforward and say that I haven’t seen many independent films that I have absolutely enjoyed let alone having them make me want to watch them again. There is just something intriguing about watching someone slowly unravel and learning all the horrible things they are capable of doing without having a second thought. Never will they doubt themselves because they don’t seem have a mechanism to control their impulsiveness. Where normal people would normally seek out help…Danny doesn’t.
