Delivery (2006)

Review by the Fiend of Grue

Delivery tells the story of Monty, a big, huge, bearded beast of man who delivers pizza for Pie In The Sky pizza. Monty is having a rough day as usual. While working on a day he is supposed to be off, every asshole in town must have ordered a pizza and asked for Monty to be the one to deliver it. After being given 6 pizzas to deliver all across the city, Monty’s first stop is to a house full of naked nympho hotties who tease him and in the end don’t even pay him the full bill. At the next house a bratty kid repeatedly calls Monty fat. While delivering to the third house, Monty meets the interesting beauty, Bibi. Despite a kid being in her house that also calls Monty fat, the stop at Bibi’s house is pleasant, he admires her and her paintings. That night as Monty lies awake in his bed, he cannot shake the sight of Bibi from his mind.

As Monty sleeps, we are shown a troubled past, through flashbacks. We see his father being verbally abused by his mother for being a fat loser, delivery man, eventually causing Monty’s father to go off the deep end, killing her and then himself, all in front of Monty. To deal with the trauma inflicted by seeing this, Monty sees a therapist bombshell by the name of Martha with whom he sexually fantasizes about.

Day in and day out, Monty takes abuse from just about everyone he comes in contact with, including a nearly deaf old woman. It is only Bibi that is kind to him and after delivering pizza to her for a second time, the two of them talk some more and eventually begin to date. Bibi’s brother is constantly ribbing her for dating such an unattractive and obese man, but she doesn’t care because she genuinely likes Monty. After a set of unfortunate circumstances arise, Monty is fired from his delivery job by his boss who then phones Bibi and tells her all sorts of lies about Monty. Monty then goes to Bibi’s house to talk to her about it and after telling his side of the story, Bibi says that she believes him but still needs time away to be by herself. This is the final straw for Monty and sets off a killing spree. First Monty goes after his bastard former boss and then one by one he hunts down every person who ever called him names or made his life a living hell.

Delivery is pretty much a by-the-numbers slasher film that doesn’t really break any new ground or progress the sub-genre in any way. Matt Nelson is good in his role as Monty Goth, but the rest of the cast is only decent to sub par. The editing is bad at times and the story suffers at times, for example there is a strange scene where Monty goes to a women’s house (the boss of his second job that he takes at the request of his therapist) to paint and he finds himself surrounded by cross dressers and gay men who hit on him. It’s just bizarre, unneeded and unnecessary to advance the storyline.

The movie does have a dark comedic side to it that is hard not to laugh at, at times. Even though you feel sorry for poor old Monty, some of the dialogue is funny (and meant to be) as the mean spirited people that Monty encounter poke fun at him. After having a fairly decent build up, Delivery fails to deliver on the goods and the pay off is a drag. It’s only in the last 25 minutes of the movie that Monty goes on his rampage and it’s with mixed results. There are a few scenes of bloody carnage, but there are also some very lame moments like the terribly cheesy and generic looking electrocution scene where Monty fries the entire house full of naked nymphos in their front yard. It looks like some effect that would be used in a 1980’s made for TV movie…yikes!

So, with Delivery, there is nothing new to see here. It’s a case of the same old, same old that’s already been seen and done a thousand times before. It’s not completely avoidable, but I wouldn’t recommend spending money on it either.
