Book of Lore (2007)

Review by the Angry Princess

Usually when the screener list of DVDs comes in and we all place our bids on who wants to review what, I always seem to pick the weird ones- well not this time! Book Of Lore was right up my alley.

Rick’s girlfriend Rachael is found dead and no ones seems to have a clue of what happened, even Sheriff Barlow is speechless. Rick decides to take matters into his own hands and asks a couple of friends to help him find out what the hell is going on. The town of Latonsville is in a panic with the thought of a killer on the loose.

Jason, whose mother is a Jesus fanatic, finds and old notebook titled the Book of Lore under his dead brother Darren’s bed and shows the guys. The book is filled with the town’s seediest secrets and they come across a drawing that depicts the exact way Rick’s girlfriend was killed. Since Jason has a horrible time getting out of the house because of his holy roller mother, the majority of the search is done by Evan and Rick. Evan is a trip with a buzzer on his bike to make sure all of his pizza’s are delivered in 20 minutes or less.

When reading the Book of Lore they learn of some of the town’s sordid past and it also gives hints of who the next victim would be and how they will die. This book was written by The Devils Left Hand, a killer from the town’s past who took children right from their houses at night. Jason explains to Rick that his brother Darren was once obsessed with the Book Of Lore and took it with him everywhere, never was it out of his sight or grip. Could the killer be Jason’s brother, or has The Devil’s Left Hand returned to finish what he started years before?

You never know what you are getting yourself into when watching independent films. They can be very painful to watch because of boredom or lack of substance but not the Book Of Lore. It had a little bit of everything in it from folklore to murder. It was great watching this whole clever mystery unfold the old fashioned way with suspense and good old guessing at who the killer really was. This movie is a great watch, Chris Lamartina did an excellent job!

So curl up in your favorite chair with a blanket and some popcorn to munch on while you take my word for it and watch this very entertaining story about a small town’s fate. Will they stop the madness before it’s too late? This movie will keep you interested throughout it’s entire unraveling of the truth and will tempt you into wanting to tell Jason’s evangelist mom to put a sock in it already. This flick is something you absolutely need to put at the top of your things to do list.
